Watches (In effect)

Waterspout watch in effect

Northern Georgian Bay

Issued 05:17 AM EDT 07 September 2024 Conditions are favourable for the development of waterspouts.

Conditions will remain favourable today through tonight and into Sunday morning.

Wind speeds inside the spray ring of a waterspout are 45 knots or higher. Vulnerable vessels are at risk of damage or capsizing. Mariners are urged to take all necessary precautions and prepare for the possibility of waterspout activity. Postpone voyage or seek safe harbour if possible. Keep in mind that waterspouts cannot be seen at night and may strike suddenly. Waterspouts are generally short-lived in nature, typically lasting 20 minutes or less. Waterspouts sometimes appear as funnel clouds with swirling water visible near the surface.

Waterspouts are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. Under favourable conditions, this weak rotation could intensify and become a tornado.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. For more information monitor Canadian Coast Guard radio or Weatheradio stations.
