West Coast Vancouver Island North

Issued 9:26 PM PDT 23 July 2024 Conditions are favourable for the development of waterspouts.

Where: Queen Charlotte Sound, Central Coast, southern Hecate Strait and northern West Coast Vancouver Island North.

When: Now through Wednesday afternoon.

Remarks: Favourable conditions for waterspout development are present as an upper low moves over the central BC waters.

Wind speeds inside the spray ring of a waterspout are 45 knots or higher. Vulnerable vessels are at risk of damage or capsizing. Keep in mind that waterspouts cannot be seen at night and may strike suddenly. Waterspouts are generally isolated in nature although they can also occur in families of two or more. Waterspouts are generally short-lived in nature, typically lasting 20 minutes or less. Spray rings associated with waterspouts can measure in the tens of metres. Waterspouts sometimes appear as funnel clouds with swirling water visible near the surface.

Sound.
By 10:00 a.m. PDT Wednesday weakening low 1018 mb located west of
McInnes Island.

At 4:00 p.m. PDT Wednesday approaching ridge located west of the
offshore waters.

Issued 7:21 PM PDT 23 July 2024 A low over Queen Charlotte Sound is spreading southeast gales to
West Vancouver Island North this evening. Winds will subside tonight
as the low weakens.
