Special weather statement in effect for:
- Dempster
Prolonged stretch of hot weather.
Timespan: Now through potentially much of next week.
Locations: Central and Northern Yukon
Hazards: Daytime highs in the upper 20's, overnight lows in the lower-teens.
The central and northern Yukon will continue to experience a stretch of warmer than average temperatures. Daytime highs in the mid to high 20's, and overnight lows in the low to mid teens are expected.
The northern Yukon will begin to return to near seasonal values by early next week. The central Yukon can expect these above seasonal temperatures to continue through much of next week.
With elevated temperatures, the risk of heat related illness does increase.
Freezing levels rise throughout this event and will lead to an increase in snowmelt and snowpack instability. Increased stream flows due to run-off are possible.
Although heat is expected, bodies of water still remain cool for this time of year and may pose a risk of hypothermia with prolonged exposure.
