Extreme Cold Warning in effect for:
  • R.M. of Cana including Melville

Extreme wind chill values of minus 40 and colder are expected Tuesday night for parts of eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba. A cold, arctic air mass is moving over eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba. Under this cold air mass, overnight lows will drop to near minus 30 and colder. These cold temperatures combined with northerly winds of 10 to 15 km/h will produce extreme wind chill values of minus 40 and colder. There will be some moderation in the extreme wind chill values during the day on Wednesday, but expect extreme wind chill values to return again on Wednesday night. Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Keep dry to stay warmer. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables. If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside. Keep moving to maintain your body heat and seek shelter from the wind. Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to SKstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #SKStorm.
