Blizzard warning in effect for:

  • Naujaat

Blizzard conditions with poor visibility in snow and blowing snow are expected or occurring.

A low pressure system approaching from the western arctic is forecast to move through Kivalliq this afternoon and evening. Snow and mild temperatures associated with the system will be quickly replaced by plummeting temperatures and very strong northwest winds tonight and Saturday. Temperatures will drop well into the minus twenties to near minus 30 with widespread blizzard conditions as winds gust to 80 or 90 km/h. The blizzard is expected to persist into Sunday as the system stalls over Baffin Island.

For Baker Lake, the blizzard will begin late this afternoon. For Arviat, Rankin Inlet, Whale Cove and Chesterfield Inlet, the blizzard will begin this evening. For Naujaat and Coral Harbour, the blizzard will begin overnight. Blizzard conditions are expected to persist into Saturday and perhaps even into Sunday for all locations.

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility.

Blizzard warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of 400 metres or less are expected for at least 6 hours.
