Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing heavy rain. Locations: Burin Peninsula, Avalon Peninsula. Potential rainfall rates: locally 15 to 25 mm per hour in thunderstorms. Time span: this afternoon. Remarks: A second area of showers and thunderstorms is approaching southeastern Newfoundland. The public can expect frequent showers and scattered thunderstorms giving brief periods of very heavy rain. Local rainfall totals could range between 30 and 50 mm by this evening. When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility.
